The Bible and Gun Club
About 10 years ago there was a low budget film entitled The Bible and Gun Club. It describes a group of door to door salesmen who sell both guns and bibles to needy citizens on their way to a national sales convention in Las Vegas. The salesmen find no contradiction in this seemingly diverse product line and as we see in the Tiller murder recently, neither does some of the religious right. I am not anti gun or anti religion but religion has been used throughout history to justify truly horrific acts of violence, and I believe that guns sometimes allow cowards to commit violent acts they would not normally have the power to commit. When combined, it can lead to attacks on American soldiers in front of recruiting stations or the brutal murder of a man inside his own church. Both of these men made murder look easy and both will claim justification through their religious beliefs. Both men, it seems, would have been willing customers of those ridiculous door to door salesmen from the movie
The movie, by the way, is hard to find. Beg, borrow or steal a copy and enjoy all of it’s grainy black and white glorious satire.
