Sonia Sotomayor – Pat Buchanan
Pat Buchanan has resurfaced as a reliably conservative sound bite machine for MSNBC this week over Obama’s Supreme Court Nominee. Pat seems to be singularly focused on the one issue of the white firefighters who filed a discrimination suit against New Haven Ct. The case, and Sotomayor’s ethnicity has combined for him into a perfect storm of white male fear.
Buchanan, one must remember, is of the conservative generation who truly fear the onrush of minority political power. He is still operating as if there is a silent majority of white Americans who will eventually rise up and fight for their traditional values and rights as a white ruling class. Most Americans, however, have accepted the inevitable march towards a post racial America. Those who have not, find themselves increasingly on the outside looking in and wondering what happened (Republican Party anyone). Today, with an African American family in the White House, these views just seem out of date and insignificant.
Pat does have some company, however. Most notably Sean Hannity, who will never miss an opportunity to talk about minority racism against whites. And of course Rush Limbaugh who is attempting to redefine Obama as a “reverse racist” simply because his life experience must make him one. Their brand of fear mongering will ultimately influence more people than Pat Buchanan will. Thankfully, only to that shrinking group of misguided souls who are predisposed to think that way in the first place. In fact Pat’s particular style of old school racism only helps to highlight how ridiculous these arguments really are.
