Supreme Court Nomination – The Left
While the right wing pundits spent time beating their chests and spitting into the gale force winds that constitute the Sotomayor nomination, the left were so confident in ultimate victory in this battle that they could spend their time analyzing the right’s strategy and tactics. Chris Mathews Hardball made it quite clear that the Republicans are in an impossible situation. By fighting against a Hispanic, female, obviously qualified nominee, they will become even more narrowly defined as a party of old white men. In fact Mathews opined that Obama is itching for this fight, and he knows that it is a no win situation for the Republicans. Knowing that they would not be able to help themselves, he has dared them to do their worst and suffer the consequences.
Rachel Maddow provided one of the most insightful bits of commentary regarding Sonya Sotomayor. She was able to offer enough evidence of Sotomayor’s moderate credentials that liberals could be a little nervous right now. She even quoted one statistic that says Sotomayor sided with her conservative colleagues 95% of the time. To be fair, Rachel Maddow is not above using statistics subjectively and there was no definition of “conservative colleague”, but this is on its face a surprisingly high percentage. It does, however, prove to be an effective push back for the right’s liberal activist judge mantra.
Unless some unknown piece of information comes to light regarding Sotomayor, every time the right takes a wild swing at Obama’s nominee, they leave themselves completely open to the left’s continually effective counter punches.
