Supreme Court Nominee – Rush Limbaugh

Saturday, August 8, 2009
By Mike Burns

The day just wouldn’t be complete without a quick note about Rush Limbaugh. Rush predictably chimed in with his unique vision of Sonia Sotomayor. Rush just couldn’t help himself and had to make it all about race. The very fact that Sotomayor is Hispanic became the sole reason Obama nominated her and in turn, the most important reason why the Republicans should oppose her. Obama, it seems, is a “reverse racist” and that is why he nominated Sotomayor who is also a “reverse racist”. By associating Obama’s and Sotomayor’s race with racism he makes it OK for his listeners to oppose both of them because of their race. He makes it OK to hate based on race. It is an insidiously crafted argument, tailor made for the education level of his primary audience. It comes with a price, however. It sends a message to all Hispanics that Sotomayor’s achievements are not her own. She doesn’t deserve them. No matter how hard you work or how much success you achieve, Hispanics, African Americans, gays and lesbians don’t ever really get there on their own.

One could argue that the educational level that Linbaugh’s audience must have achieved in order to actually believe his words are the only truth is a strong indication of the need for our government make further commitments to improve education in this country.

I graduated from a four year institution of higher learning, and if I learned anything, it is to have an inquiring mind. To ask questions. To check several sources before believing everything I hear.

What is the educational level of Limbaugh’s listeners?
