The Deadly Consequences Of Republican Lies
What are the consequences of the conservatives push to derail health care reform?
1. Higher costs for all Americans
Nobody, on the left or the right, disputes the fact that health care costs are going to rise astronomically over the next ten years. Since the Republicans killed reform in 1994 and did nothing over the next eight years to fix the problem, it is now the Democrats responsibility to take the bull by the horns and do something about this crisis. If the Republicans get their way and kill reform this year, then more and more Americans and businesses will simply be unable to afford the rising costs of care.
2. More profits for the insurance companies
Who benefits from the defeat of health care reform? Who likes the system just the way it is? The insurance companies have done quite well under the current system. They hold near monopolies in some states and they decide what premiums you will pay and what kind of coverage you will receive. Any industry that has that much control over its market is going to fight to the death to keep it. It is no wonder that the health insurance lobby spends more in Washington than any other group except the banking industry. If they are willing to spend billions to keep the status quo, then how much money are they going to get if they win?
3. More people uninsured = more people dead
The ultimate consequence of the defeat of health care reform is more people dying from lack of basic health care. Right now millions of Americans do not have access to regular doctor visits or early warning tests that can catch treatable conditions before it becomes too late. This is a shameful situation for this country to be in. In essence, we have health care rationing right now. It is just being rationed by health insurance companies who are shutting out anybody without enough money to grease the wheels. No money – no MRI.
The Republicans will tell you that this is the best health care system in the world. They may be right, but it is only the best system in the world if you can afford it. The Republicans will tell you that Obama’s plan will set up “death panels” or health care rationing. But we already have that right now with the insurance companies. The Republicans will tell you that they have a plan to reform health care but nobody seems to have ever seen it. The Republicans will say anything they can to stop health care reform from going forward all for the sake of hurting the President at the expense of the American people.
Two things we know for sure are that people are dying right now because of Republicans and if they get their way even more will die in the future.
