A Man Who Made A Difference

Wednesday, August 26, 2009
By Mike Burns

There are not many men in history who have a chance to truly make a difference in this world. Ted Kennedy was a man who found himself in that position over and over again and never shrank from his responsibility. Perhaps this sense of responsibility was made even more profound by the fact that his three older brothers had been cut down so early in their life before they could achieve all of their goals. Perhaps he pursued his own personal penance for the death of Mary Jo Kopechne. Regardless of the reason, Ted Kennedy will leave a legacy in the Senate and this country of leadership and courage that can be matched by few men in history. His accomplishments are many and millions of Americans are better off because of his personal vision of what government could be. If you are a women athlete who has the resources to succeed, you have Ted Kennedy to thank. If you are disabled, you have Ted Kennedy to thank for the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act. If you are 18, 19 or 20 years old and wish to exercise your right to vote for the candidate of your choice, you have Ted Kennedy to thank. And the list goes on and on.

The last of the brothers is dead. The Kennedy era of American politics is over.
