Georgia Republican Says New ‘Guns Everywhere’ Law A ‘God-Given’ Right

Failed Senate candidate and one of Georgia’s most prominent science deniers gave his opinion on God’s view of gun rights today.

“The Second Amendment is the one that really protects all of our liberties that we are given by our Lord, and our God-given rights, and are protected under the Constitution.”

44-western-cover-art-1180The idea that The Constitution was dictated to the founding fathers by God is not a new one among conservatives. By believing that the ideas and even the very words of The Constitution come from some higher authority than man, they can falsely conclude that those words can never be interpreted differently as society progresses and changes. God’s law does not change, they argue, even if our society’s ever more complex problems demand solutions that the founders never could have dreamed would be necessary. Forget the fact that more guns means more violence. God wants you to have that gun. He wants you to be able to carry it into schools and bars and restaurants and office buildings. If he didn’t, he never would have written it into The Constitution. It sounds extreme because it is, but according to Broun, who believes that even commonly accepted scientific truths are ‘lies from the pit of hell’, it is a perfectly reasonable argument.

Broun really gets crazy, however, when he tries to justify the law by hyping how much safer Georgia will be with people carrying guns around wherever they go.

“We see as we go forward that schools are going to be safer, that everybody around in any locale is going to be safer because someone who understands how to utilize a firearm will be there to protect other folks, and I think it’s going to be a very positive move.”

This is another old conservative piece of ignorance that gets repeated over and over again without much thought. They assume that anybody who owns a gun and can pass the minimal standards set out by the State of Georgia for carrying that gun will be just like a John Wayne western movie character come to life with perfect marksmanship and perfectly sound judgment on who are the bad guys and who are the good guys in any situation, no matter how stressful and dangerous. Gun’s, they argue, are a deterrent to violence and mayhem and a ‘good guy with a gun’ is automatically qualified to protect themselves and any innocent bystanders from danger simply by the fact that they are a ‘good guy with a gun’.

What happens when two ‘good guys’ with guns meet each other in the street. How is one person with a gun on his hip going to know if the other person with a gun on his hip qualifies as a ‘good guy’? Do they draw down on each other automatically just in case? Do they ask for each other’s papers to find out if they are legally authorized to carry that gun? It seems that we didn’t have very long to wait for the answer to that question. Evidently today, on the very day that the ‘guns everywhere’ law went into effect, two openly armed men encountered each other in a local Georgia convenience store. Suspicions were aroused, hands were placed on the guns and at least one man actually pulled his gun as he demanded to see identification and permits for the other man’s gun. Thankfully the second man kept a cool head and did what any sane person who is confronted by a crazy person with a gun should do. He called the cops and the first man was arrested. Here is a perfect example of the presence of guns provoking an incident, not diffusing one. This time, violence was averted, but what about next time. if either man was just a little bit more on edge or angry or paranoid, what would have happened? Don’t worry, it’s all OK even if violence does break out because God wants us to have those guns. Paul Broun says so.

About Mike Burns

For years I was a self described independent. I liked the idea that America was built on the powerful idea of compromise. Politics at its best was an exercise in give and take that at least tried to be respectful of both sides of an issue. However, since the rise of right wing talk radio and Fox News, this no longer seems possible. For me, it is time to fight back in my small way. The conservatives have had their way with the truth for too long without enough of us standing up and saying no more lies. Maybe this blog will make a small difference, maybe not. The main thing is that it will satisfy my need to speak out against conservative hate and hypocrisy. Mike Burns Google+
